Open the desktop app the first time
For: all plans
You get the Explaindio 5 AI desktop app from the download page. The first time you open the Explaindio 5 AI desktop app, your computer may ask you to confirm. Here's what you'll see and what to click.
Only do this for the file you downloaded from that page.
On Linux
The Linux app is one file, called an AppImage, for 64-bit Intel or AMD PCs. There's nothing to install, but the file needs one step before the first double-click.
Before that step, a double-click doesn't start the app. Linux shows a password window that says "Authentication is required to set up a loop device". If you see it, click Cancel.
- Put the file where it will stay, for example in a folder called Apps in your home folder. The app runs from that file, so don't delete it later.
- Allow the file to run. You do this once:
- In Files, on Ubuntu: right-click the file and click Properties. Scroll to the bottom and switch on Executable as Program.
- In Thunar: open the file's Properties, click the Permissions tab, and tick Allow this file to run as a program. Thunar shows a general reminder about running programs under the box.
- Or in a terminal: chmod +x ~/Apps/Explaindio-5-AI-linux-latest.AppImage (change Apps if you put the file in another folder).
- Double-click the file. Explaindio 5 AI opens on the Connect to Explaindio screen.
- That screen asks for a desktop key. Follow the line on the screen to make one in your Explaindio account, paste it, and click Connect.
Updates on Linux
The Linux app updates itself. When a new version has been downloaded, a window says Update ready. Click Restart now, and the app closes and reopens as the new version. You don't download a new file, and you don't repeat the steps above.
On Windows
- Double-click the file you downloaded, Explaindio-5-AI-windows-latest.exe.
- A blue window says Windows protected your PC. Click More info.
- The window now shows the file's name and "Unknown publisher". Click Run anyway.
- You'll see "Installing Explaindio 5 AI. This takes about a minute." About a minute later, Explaindio 5 AI opens by itself.
On some PCs the blue window doesn't appear, and the app installs right away.
If you see a Smart App Control window
On some PCs, Windows shows a window titled "Smart App Control blocked an app that may be unsafe" instead. It has no Run anyway button. Click Okay. Then you have three choices:
- Try again later. The window says Microsoft will review the app. Open the downloaded file again another time.
- Switch Smart App Control off. Click Start, type Windows Security and open it. Click App & browser control, then Smart App Control settings. Choose Off, and answer Yes when Windows asks "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?" Then open the downloaded file again. You'll see the blue window from the steps above. Smart App Control is a Windows safety setting, so this is your choice.
- Use Explaindio 5 AI in your web browser on that PC. It's the same app, with nothing to install.
Updates on Windows
For now, the Windows app doesn't update itself. When there's a new version, the app shows "A new version of Explaindio 5 AI is ready: download it." Click Open download page, download the new file, and open it the same way as the first time. You'll see the same window again for each new version.
On a Mac
These steps are for macOS 14 (Sonoma).
- Double-click the .dmg file you downloaded. A window opens with the Explaindio 5 AI icon, an arrow and Applications.
- Drag the icon onto Applications.
- Open Explaindio 5 AI from your Applications folder. For a few minutes, nothing seems to happen. The icon sits in the Dock while your Mac checks the app. Please wait.
- A window says "Explaindio 5 AI" can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software. Click OK.
- Open the Apple menu, then System Settings, then Privacy & Security. Scroll down to Security. Next to the line about Explaindio 5 AI, click Open Anyway.
- Use Touch ID or type your Mac's password.
- In the window that follows, click Open. Explaindio 5 AI opens. The next time you open it, your Mac doesn't ask.
